Joe Satriani - Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock
Written by:Derek
The school of rock is in session and Professor "Satch"afunkilus is providing the lessons. That's right aspiring guitar virtuosos, the man who once tutored Steve Vai and Kirk Hammet on the musterion of the six string has rekindled the melodic fire of the 80's and given fans his best album since "Flying in a Blue Dream". Like a great author, Satriani illustrates his music...not through actual pictures but through beautiful tone, melody, and phrasing. Those seeking a 26 mile, shred-a-thon need to look elsewhere (think of this album more as a 10k); although Satriani can blaze with the best of them, he is at his finest when telling a story sans vocals. There are definitely moments he gives Speed Racer a run for his money (see "Asik Vaysel", Andalusia), but overall the album represents a rock legend getting back in touch with his roots. That said, this time around (no Hanson pun intended) Satch takes the time to explore a "funkier" side than he has in past efforts.* *Fear not..Marky Mark and the gang were not involved in the making of this record in any way, shape or form.
