Kate Voegele - Don't Look Away

If you have been listening to pop radio recently, you have noticed that there is a female youth movement invading the airwaves.  From Sara Bareilles to Colby Caillet right down to the ubiquitous Hannah Montana, the ladies are making their presence known.

First, let me say that if "Don't Look Away" was being graded on originality it would be spending the summer months hanging out with the rest of the underachieving misfits making up Freshman year.  Save for a few flashes of creative individuality, there is absolutely no song that you won't rack your brain trying to figure out where you have heard it before.  In some cases, an individual track may be a collage of tunes all rolled up in one. Take Track 7 for instance. It starts out by blatantly ripping off the solo break from "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and neatly segways into the melody of "Give A Little Bit".  

Coincidence?  I think not!  

The sad part is, I actually think Kate Voegele is a talented musician with a distinctive,endearing vocal style.  Look past the fact that the songs sound strikingly familiar and you have a pretty darn catchy pop record. In particular, "Chicago", "It's Only Life", and "Kindly Unspoken" stand out as fantastic cuts.  This type of potential has me curious to see what Kate has to offer for her sophomore release.  I have a feeling her best work might be just around the corner.
