Hinder - Take It To The Limit

Hinder just won't let the 80's be forgotten. Don't believe me???

Give a listen to "Loaded and Alone" and I promise that you will find yourself singing "Living On A Prayer". Or better yet, press your luck (just don't stop on a Whammy) and spin "Without You".....Hey Hinder, Cheap Trick
called and wants "The Flame" back! And no 80's album would be complete without a guest appearance from Motley Crue's very own resident evil, Mick Mars(check out "Take It To The Limit").

But don't worry, the band still does what IT does best: Write immature top 40 rock power ballads that let listeners know just how good they are with the ladies. And in case you aren't listening to their lyrics, Hinder reminds you with a cd insert that may make even Hugh Hefner jealous.

Note to mothers: you better pray your son buys the digital download version of the album.

All in all the music is irreverent, fun, catchy and a completely credible Sophomore effort..It's unapologetic 80's rock at it's finest! Let's put it this way, if you liked Hinder before you like them just as much, if not more, now.

Suggestion: Call the next album "Infidelity in Hi-Fidelity". I can't think of a band that could make better use of that title!

Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone

As far as I'm concerned, the only musical artists that deserve to wear makeup and costumes on stage are David Bowie, Kiss, Alice Cooper, and Marilyn Manson. Other than that it just looks like Halloween threw up on the local
dive bar. GWAR??? Insane Clown Posse?? Mudvayne??.................It's just plain sad. So why Slipknot finds it necessary to play rock and roll masquerade is beyond me. These guys are actually talented and most definitely rock you like a hurricane; they don't need a gimmick, just less band members. I mean with 9 members in this economy........you have to think layoffs.

For their latest album, Slipknot use their special brand of Pantera/Metallica/Korn/Sevendust infused metal and pummel the listener into submission. Par usual, musical highlights include any song where Corey Taylor gets to show off his vocals (a nice contrast to the Neanderthal grunting that permeates the verses of many songs) Couple that with rapid fire drumming and rapid fire guitar riffs (as well as solos) and you get a fantastic metal album.

Metal is not dead my friends, it just vacations in Iowa.

Buckcherry - Black Butterflly

If you don't like Buckcherry then you don't like rock and roll....Print it.

In an industry full of wanna be's and has beens, Buckcherry remain true to their AC/DC / GNR infused musical stylings and do their forefathers proud. These guys aren't about artistic exploration and making the world a better place....we have U2 for that. In fact, you would be much more likely to find these guys at the Seventh Veil than a Habitat for Humanity softball game.

Coming off the surprise breakout, "Fifteen", (apparently the third time is the charm) Buckcherry has not lost a step. Instead, they find themselves in full stride with what can easily be considered an equally strong effort. Josh Todd's abrasive, yet endearing vocals carry each track and deliver hook after melodic hook. Of course, no Buckcherry album, is complete without at least one song dedicated to depravity, and this go round is no exception.
Lend an ear to "Too Drunk..." for a mere 15 seconds and you will understand exactly what I'm talking about.

Highlights include:

Dreams
Don't Go Away
Talk To Me
Tired of You

Metallica - Death Magnetic

Group therapy.....relationship counseling??? Does that sound like a band or a marriage that is one step away from Dr. Phil's casting couch? "St. Anger" was truly an awful, awful album that can be proudly compared to other catastrophic rock band let downs such as Kiss', "The Elder". The one difference is............it was even
worse!!!!!!! Let's face it, the only semi-redeeming quality of "St. Anger" was the album cover.

So could the band once informally referred to as "Alcoholica" be dried up like a blister in the sun? Thankfully not! "Death Magnetic" brings back the Metallica of old.............riff after riff after riff.... Songs easily clear the 5 minute mark and are not only chock full of Kirk Hammett's guitar solos, but even include the resurgence of Lars Ulrich's double bass thunder!! Why the band itself has deemed "Death Magnetic" to fall musically somewhere between "And Justice For All" and the "Black" album. A comfortable place for it to reside considering the popularity of those albums.

One thing I really enjoy about "Death Magnetic" is the guitar tones. They are so thick and chunky, they would bring a smile to Mrs. McNabb herself!

Welcome home (Sanitarium) Metallica! We dub you forgiven!

Highlights include:

Zebrahead - Phoenix

Over the past 10 years, Zebrahead has consistently output their very own Calabassas, CA blend of "The Offspring meets 311 at the skate park", high octane rock. Although very popular in Japan ("Phoenix" debuted at #1), they have somehow avoided mainstream US audiences. Not even a promotion with Playboy suporting 2000's radio friendly "Playmate of the Year" got them any "endless love"......And Playboy is to American male adolescents, what Canasta is to your grandma's retirement community.

"Phoenix" contains 16 tracks of vintage Zebrahead: upbeat, guitar driven rock mixed with catchy choruses and an ample dose of rap. There are enough (gaba gaba) Hey! Hey! Hey! chants to make Joey Ramone proud. My only real critique on the record is that by the time you make it to the 9th track, you may become weary of the same ol', same ol', if not numb to the relentless energy these guys emote. But that is definitely not a bad thing. Zebrahead knows what they do well, have a blast doing it, and give their fans what they want. In an age where bands are constantly searching for their true identity, it is nice to see one that never left home.

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip

Trent Reznor is as prolific an artist as any out there.....outside of Ani Difranco who seems to put out an album for every season (turn, turn, turn. With the Internet's low barrier to entry (if you have a computer and a MySpace account, you at least have "Tom" as a virtual friend/fan), distribution of music has never been easier. Computer savvy artists no longer have to focus on the long coveted "record deal" to make it big and can now focus on churning out artistically satisfying music in the comforts of their parent's basement.

At the front of this movement are musicians such as Reznor, who embrace the Web and provide fans with the ability to download complete albums of work before they are released on the quickly fading CD medium. Heck, "The Slip" was available for free on the NIN website months before it actually hit the shelves.

Limited to a total of 10 tracks (3 of which are instrumentals), "The Slip" feels like a snack rather than a main course. Luckily for fans, it is more like a package of "Suzi Qs" than an orange and a glass of ice water. Fans of Rezonor's unique industrial blend of distortion (at times it sounds like somebody mic'd a vacuum cleaner playing through a blown speaker) and syncopated
beats will find plenty to satisfy.

The Rosewood Thieves - From the Decker House

I'm still listening to this album now as I write the review as I'm a little lost for words, these guys have a great presence in the flavor of the Beatles and John Lennon but it's a crowded and fierce area of music to be trying to make your living. Especially since you still have to compete with the Beatles for listeners :) But you listen to them and tell me they don't give you that feeling that your listening to a 2008 version of what the Beatles may have been.

These guys seem to have that down home folk feel with the organ's and laid back vibe of the instruments and some of the lyrics but what really gets you is the lead singer Erik Jordan's voice blending it all together and sounding freakishly like Lennon.

I can tell you though if these guys were pumping out music at the pace of the Beatles or Lennon I'd be buying for rotation in my relaxing music set. Just goes to show the staying power of the best of the best the Beatles....

Candlebox - Into The Sun

Candlebox rocks! (.com)

Go ahead and make your jokes about how they are a one hit wonder, glam rock/grunge wannabe flash in the pan band that has contributed nothing more to the music community other than a popular power ballad ("Far Behind"). Sticks and stones may break my bones......

The fact of the matter is Candlebox oozes thoughtful, soulful, hard/pop rock like a snail in a saline foot bath! With a conversational style reminiscent of an open mic poetry session, Kevin Martin delivers passionate, heart felt vocals that captivate the listener. All the while, guitarist Peter Klett rips out distorted, bluesy licks that compliment the lyrical attack like a sycophant at a company holiday party. Seriously, Klett has such a beautiful tone and the sustain like a marathon runner(notes ring for miles and miles), that he should run for mayor of "I deserve to be recognized as a guitar god" town.

And when it is all said and done, the songs are just freakin' good! After 10 years apart, Candlebox has arguably produced their greatest work to date. There are no apologies or attempt to conform.....just 4 of "Seattle's best" making the music they want.

U2 Live From Paris

U2 I grew up on these guys I don’t remember a time when I didn’t like what I heard from U2’s music and this album is no exception. They play some of their best old stuff along with some of the good new stuff, the Live in Paris album was a great find especially if you don’t have all or even most of the previous work, but that’s all this is previous work they are are selling you again. Oh and don’t forget that while they are re-selling you the same music you already own they want to sell you on their idea’s too..

So if you like supporting U2 and buying the same songs you already have you can pick this one up to, but you get a few extras with this one

-Bono’s old and scratchy voice singing live
-A live album with no “Where the Streets Have No Name”
-A bunch of whining from U2 about how no one is doing enough to help the world.
-A preachy album where you pay your $12 to be talked down to

Up to you but if I could go back in time I’d be just as happy if not happier sticking with my old U2 albums.. But if you want to be preached to, listen to the same songs again and again they are still U2 and they do still rock the house..... Three stars for the effort!

Lust Lust Lust

I simply love this album, not one song, two songs but the entire album. Take 60’s beach guitar sound, add gritty sand to the sweet melodies and you are taken on a ride where each song is in itself different but has a taste of the song before it, bringing you to the end where you are let off at “Honey, I Never Had You”, ready to buy another ticket and ride again. The many onion-like layers of this album produce a sound that promises to not disappoint but instead draws you in and prompts you to sing along – you won’t be able to help yourself!

This album will soon become a sweet, solid, edgy necessity to your music collection. It’s like my favorite pair of jeans, I will wear them until there are holes all through them and am physically unable to zip them up and have to throw them out at which time I will still be listening to this album. We just go together …. Like peas and carrots, milk and cookies, peaches and cream …. Helen and The Raveonettes.

Robyn – Robyn

This Swedish pop artist is far from new to the music scene, since being signed to a major label at 16 she has suffered the trials and tribulations of the music industry. This is evident in her new self titled release, “Robyn.” There are flavors of inspiration from Swedish groups “The Knife” and “Teddybear.” This electronic pop album offers honesty in the lyrics with originality in the music, although “Cobrastyle” is a Teddybears cover, Robyn’s take is arguably better than the original and is my reason for buying the album.

To most people who know me and my taste in music this may have come as a surprise, pop let alone electronic pop is not normally my style of music but to be completely honest, I saw her perform on The View … yes I was watching The View … and I was so entertained that I hopped onto iTunes and grabbed the album. The song she performed was “Cobrastyle” and I expected more of the same edgier pop but found myself (pleasantly) surprised that there were sweet sounding songs mixed in. While I did like this album overall, it hasn’t yet made heavy rotation in my music collection and thus gets a three star.

Motley Crue - Saints Of Los Angeles

"Saints Of Los Angeles" is the Crue's finest musical regurgitation since "Dr. Feelgood". The question now becomes:

Is 20 years of musical irrelevance, too little, too late?

Answer: What you talkin' about Willis??!!

Heck no it's not too late!!! Motley Crue is a like a hard rock virus...........You can't kill it, you just have to wait for it to go away. And these boys (well actually 3 middle aged men and an apparition) ain't goin' anywhere!!

God only knows how Mick Mars can lift his guitar let alone rip out riffs like Mola Ram at an infidel convention. As for the rest of the Crue, they actually look pretty good considering:

-Heroin Overdoses
-Mainlining Jack Daniels
-Multiple marriages to Pam Anderson
-More groupies than the Jonas Brothers co-headlining a Mylie Cyrus tour

For a five song salute to the gods of rock, check out:

"Saints of Los Angeles"
"Mutherf@*!er of the Year"
"Just Another Psycho"
"This Ain't A Love Song"
"Down At The Whiskey"

Glam rock artists of the 80's, Motley Crue included, were/are known for their tongue in cheek, sexual innuendo laden lyrics. It looks like some of that has gone away now that they are older and more..uh hmm....refined? (I don't think so!) Just listen to the chorus of "This Ain't A Love Song" and you will see what I'm alluding to. Let's just say it IS NOT a Bon Jovi cover song! (not that there is anything wrong with that)

Narrow Stairs

I've heard Death Cab before and always liked them, but never once thought they were a breakout band for me. That all changed with "Narrow Stairs".

It's not the best top-to-bottom album I've heard, not even in 2008, but still it has a solid place in my rotation. Overall, the album has a very seesaw feel to it with some "pop-y" songs, some instrumental songs, and some of the best lyrical songs I've heard in a while.

That said, there was one track that I thought was weird. Maybe this was due to the digital purchase and we'll be seeing more of this as time goes on, but a complete track dedicated to credits????... Why??

It annoys me that at the end of a great album I have to move to not ruin it with the credits. Yeah, yeah....I know they deserve to have their names mentioned and I could AND should just delete it, but it's the principality of it all Smokey!! I shouldn't have to delete the track at all!

Two song's that really stick out for me and that you should listen to before passing judgment:

"Bixby Canyon Bridge"
"Grapevine Fires"

Having both of these songs on the same album show just how good these guys really are. The mellow "Grapevine Fires" with it's great melody and lyrics and "Bixby Canyon Bridge" with it's up-tempo beat and great guitar show me all I need to know to become a believer.

Recycled Recipes - EP

To start off, let's say I am no music snob, but to me it just seems that most of the songs covered here were better the first time around. That's not to say they are bad or don't merit a listen...much the opposite...but they just don't live up to the originals. Thus, a 3 star.

There are parts of each song that I enjoy more than the original and in general I am really into the soft, smooth style that Donavan strings together here. I just have a hard time swallowing these as better then the originals.

I know I seem like I'm harping, but Mr. Frankenreiter (there will be no hot dog jokes in this column.....feel free to make your own) is biting off a lot by trying to cover CCR, Dylan and others in a single set.......a feat few other musicians would dare try much less get this close.

If you're thinking of picking up a few of the songs I would suggest:

"Fortunate Son"
"It Makes No Difference"

But, if you are just looking for good music overall and love the sound, you can't go wrong picking up the whole album.

Slash

For me, band autobiographies are like a pregnant woman's craving for Bon Bons and peanut butter pickle sandwiches...simply put, "I like em' a lot".

Now when I think cool, Slash tops the list: Snakes, porno stars, tatoos, a cool top hat and uhhh...oh yea...intricately slinky guitar solos with a tone so smooth it should be sponsored by Maker's Mark.

The biggest surprise when reading Slash's account of his illustrious career is not the sex, drugs and alcohol........it's the fact that he got his nickname because he couldn't sit still! Are you kidding me??? Slash looks more like Keith Richard's stoned younger brother than a founding member of the Blink 182 fan club.

If you are like me and soak up tales of rock lore like a Grand Slam breakfast after a sold out show at the Whiskey, this book is for you. Slash recounts his rise to stardom in such a laid back matter of fact manner, you can't help but believe him. The only part of the book that you will question is Slash's impressive command of the English language.....Anyone who drinks a gallon of vodka of as part of a daily routine should not be so lucid.

Note to Axl: Thanks for breaking up the greatest rock and roll band of our generation since the mighty Led Zeppelin.

Sincerely,

Colbie Caillat - Coco

I had no idea Jennifer Aniston was a solo artist!! Could this be the ripened fruit of a deepening relationship with Jon Mayer? Perhaps an emotional byproduct of the highly publicized, ever growing "Brangelina" nursery driving her to bare her innermost thoughts? Has "the breakup" with Vince Vaughn caused her to go "Alanis"?

I kid people, I kid. It's just that the album cover to Colbie Caillat's debut, "Coco", bears a striking resemblance to "The Brady Bunch Goes To Hawaii" guest starring Jennifer Aniston. Fortunately for all of us, this budding singer sounds a lot more like Jack Johnson than Barry Williams.

With "bubbly" bass lines and smooth, sultry vocals, "Coco" is the margarita mixing, Corona swilling, "thank you sir, can I please have another" ice cold beverage, summer soundtrack you have been looking for. From My Space sweetheart, to Platinum recording artist Colbie Caillat has quickly proven herself to be a talented and successful pop singer/songwriter.

Throw another piece of driftwood on the fire, some shrimp on the barbie and enjoy these highlights:

"Oxygen"
"The Little Things"
"One Fine Wire"
"Bubbly"
"Feelings Show"
"Realize"

Note to Colbie: It would be a great idea to give Adam Levine (Maroon 5) a call and enlist him to perform a duet of "Realize" at the MTV Music Awards. All I ask in return for this great piece of career advice is some tickets to the performance! Oh and some MusicRant plugs on your website of course!!!

Story Of The Year - The Black Swan

Continuing the recent trend of less "screamo" and more traditional hard rock, Story Of The Year re-emerge with their third and best album. Named after Nassim Nicholas Taleb's "black swan theory" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory), "The Black Swan" lives up to its name by delivering a cohesive collection of catchy, well constructed rock tunes that at least I wasn't expecting.

Chock full of buzz saw guitar, arena rock drums, and neatly placed harmonies that accompany a proper dosage of alt-rock vocals, this is caffeinated pop metal of anthemic proportions. I'm sure there is some sort of politically charged message these guys are trying to convey, but who is listening for that? This is simply too hook-a-licious (not to be confused with "bootylicious") to elicit any sort of action other than a good ol' fashioned head bang or impromptu dashboard karaoke concert.

The Used - Shallow Believer

"One man's trash is another man's treasure".

Take garage sales for instance. Have you ever seen a more disturbing display of humanity than grown men and women fighting over a $2 crock pot or a $1 lot of 50 VHS tapes (a lot that includes both "Buns of Steel" and the highly popular "Abs of Steel")?

My point is that different people have different tastes and may even be shockingly fanatical about supporting their passions. For bands that try to lessen expectations by labeling an album a collection of "B sides" this is great news; it means that there is room for less popular music as well as a set of lightly used "Freezy Freakies"(google this if you have no idea what I am talking about)

How does The Used's latest EP of "didn't quite make the cut" songs turn out? Amazingly well!

"Shallow Believer" is not only more commercially acceptable than the group's last effort, "Lies For The Liars", but also contains potential Top 40 radio hits. ("Tunnel", "Sick Hearts", "Sun Comes Up" come to mind) So what if the songs absolutely, positively sound as if they belong on the band's first two full length releases? Should we care that at some points the band seem to Xerox their own melodies? Considering those albums rocked, I dub thee forgiven!!(as opposed to unforgiven of course)

As far as I'm concerned, The Used have released an album that defies the stigma of the "B side" label and sits comfortably in the band's already impressive catalog.

Highlights include:

"Devil Beside You"
"Into My Web"
"My Pesticide"
"SickHearts"
"Tunnel"

Joe Satriani - Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock

The school of rock is in session and Professor "Satch"afunkilus is providing the lessons. That's right aspiring guitar virtuosos, the man who once tutored Steve Vai and Kirk Hammet on the musterion of the six string has rekindled the melodic fire of the 80's and given fans his best album since "Flying in a Blue Dream". Like a great author, Satriani illustrates his music...not through actual pictures but through beautiful tone, melody, and phrasing.

Those seeking a 26 mile, shred-a-thon need to look elsewhere (think of this album more as a 10k); although Satriani can blaze with the best of them, he is at his finest when telling a story sans vocals. There are definitely moments he gives Speed Racer a run for his money (see "Asik Vaysel", Andalusia), but overall the album represents a rock legend getting back in touch with his roots. That said, this time around (no Hanson pun intended) Satch takes the time to explore a "funkier" side than he has in past efforts.*

*Fear not..Marky Mark and the gang were not involved in the making of this record in any way, shape or form.

Panic At The Disco - Pretty. Odd.

What a difference an "!" makes! Now simply "Panic at the Disco", Vegas' other alternative to The Killers release a Sophomore effort that sounds more like Sgt. Pepper than a Fall Out Boy B-side. Fan club members may be up in arms, but they are far too busy deciding who to bump from their "myFaves" to see the big picture.

"Pretty. Odd." has all the bells and whistles that comprised the Beatles LSD years and made George Martin a legendary producer. And although the sound isn't revolutionary, it most certainly is refreshing....especially considering these guys could have easily cashed in on a cookie cutter follow up to their successful debut. Three cheers for artistic integrity!!

Take a stroll down penny lane and enjoy:

Flyleaf

In their purest and most unadulterated state, Lacey Mosley's vocals could fit comfortably on a Vanessa Carlton or Michelle Branch recording. Add emotion, loud guitars, and a troubled childhood to the mix, and you now find yourself in the company of The Used and Korn.

From the aggressive attack and guttural vocals of "I'm So Sick" to the powerful crescendo of "So I thought", Flyleaf offers alt metal rockers musical diversity while never straying from their collective sound. Anchored by extremely good production, musicianship, as well as song writing, these guys (and gal) have the talent necessary to
stick around for years to come. If you need proof, check out the acoustic versions included in the Special Edition
release.

Highlights include:

"Fully Alive"
"Perfect"

Sponge - Galore, Galore

They may not win an award for most creative band name or be invited to a Scott Weiland intervention, but Sponge has amassed a credible and impressive 6 album discography that spans over 13 years. With more songs about drugs than a M.A.D.D. pep rally, this display of debaucherous longevity could win them their very own episode of "Behind the Music"! (If Leif Garret or Tony Orlando had their moment in the sun, you have to think these guys stand a chance.)

Bursting onto the scene in 1994 with their ubiquitous radio hit, "Plowed", the Detroit rockers found immediate commercial success as well as a supporting slot on Live's uber-popular "Throwing Copper" tour. Two years later, Sponge avoided the dreaded sophomore slump with the melancholy hit single, "Have you seen Mary". Since this time, the world is asking a similar question....This time it's, "Have you seen Sponge?"

Fast Forward to the present. Sponge has released 4 albums since 1996, the latest this past December. "Galore, Galore" shows the band returning to fine form and belting out modern hard rock hits like an angry step father!

Highlights include:

-"Through the Hard Times (Before the End)"
-"Party Till We Drop"
-"I Did It Without The Drugs"
-"Flop"
-"Wasted"

Bruce Springsteen - Magic

The Boss is back!!

(Take it easy Yankees fans....that Boss is drinking pina coladas and managing the shuffleboard team at the local Senior Center)

Of course I am referring to the one and only Bruce Springsteen! Teamed up with legendary rock producer, Brendan O'Brien (Incubus, Korn, Cold, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, etc), Bruce sounds grittier and more relevant than ever.

With lush arrangements and a new found rock sensibility, "Magic" finds the Boss back to "Born in the USA" form. More zealous fans may even compare the Boss' latest effort to Beach Boys' critically acclaimed, "Pet Sounds".

No matter how you slice it, the Garden State has a lot to be proud of.

REM - Accelerate

When I think of REM, I think of good, deep sleep. And for the last 14 years, this Athens, Georgia band of brothers have provided the soundtrack 8 out 10 insomniacs prefer to take them to sleepytown (for those not in the know, sleepytown is 130 miles north of funkytown). Apparently, spring has sprung and inspired these pop legends to dust off their distortion pedals and trade in their mandolins for Rickenbackers.

"Accelerate" finds REM expressing a sense of urgency that never relents. Even when the songs slow down, their is a certain gravitas and anxiety that is truly palpable. Out are the shiny, happy people and in are the grizzled, rock veterans displaying a renewed vigor for relevance in these digital times.

Highlights include: "Living Well Is The Best Revenge", "Man-Sized Wreath", "Supernatural Superserious", "Hollow
Man", "I'm Gonna DJ"

Black Tide - Light From Above

What were you doing in your high school years?.....Hanging out at the mall, playing on the junior varsity soccer team, perhaps even .......studying??

The youth gone wild that comprise Black Tide ARE doing none of the above. These Florida teenagers have taken the road less traveled (and a heck of a lot more glamorous) and have:

1. Gotten signed to Interscope Records
2. Played on Ozzfest
3. Released an album
4. Taken one step closer to either
a. Making millions of dollars and enjoying the excesses only fame and fortune can bring OR
b. Moving back in with mom and starting their career selling instruments at the local Guitar Center.

So enough with the fuzzy, magic 8 ball and back to the music. Black Tide may be young but they apparently have spent much more time rocking to the 80's rather than moshing to the 90's. Their music is straight up guitar driven 80's metal with cheesy lyrics (i.e. "Warriors of Time") and vocals reminiscent of Vince Neil meets Ray Gillen (Badlands).

That's not a bad thing either. Let go of your reflexive animosity toward the genre and you might just find yourself flashing the horns and banging your head
Beavis and Butthead style.

Highlights include:

"Shout", "Shockwave", "Give Me A Chance", "Hit The Lights", "Black Abyss"

Counting Crows - Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings

Saturday night's alright for fighting, Sunday morning's alright for sleeping and pancakes. And so the latest effort from the Counting Crows is aptly named.
The first six songs, which make up the "Saturday Nights" side of the album, are awesome straight ahead, guitar rock reminiscent of 1996's "Recovering the Satellites". Say no more, 5 out of 5 stars.

"Sunday Mornings" on the other hand, sounds like a bad hangover. Seriously...........I mean this is some kind of depressing. Get these guys a Red Bull and a Prozac, cause every little thing is going to be alright. Last time I checked, being a rock star is a heck of a lot better than working the graveyard shift at the Taco Bell drive thru.

Despite the great divide between "sides", "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings" remains a worthy addition to your music catalog. The first 6 songs are simply that good. Plus, there are two bright spots on the otherwise vapid "Sunday Mornings": "You Can't Count On Me" and "Come Around'.

Question: Didn't Adam Duruitz once date Courtney Cox in her "Friends" prime? If that brings this guy down, I don't want to be anywhere near him when they are playing the second stage at state fairs.

Kate Voegele - Don't Look Away

If you have been listening to pop radio recently, you have noticed that there is a female youth movement invading the airwaves. From Sara Bareilles to Colby Caillet right down to the ubiquitous Hannah Montana, the ladies are making their presence known.

First, let me say that if "Don't Look Away" was being graded on originality it would be spending the summer months hanging out with the rest of the underachieving misfits making up Freshman year. Save for a few flashes of creative individuality, there is absolutely no song that you won't rack your brain trying to figure out where you have heard it before. In some cases, an individual track may be a collage of tunes all rolled up in one. Take Track 7 for instance. It starts out by blatantly ripping off the solo break from "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and neatly segways into the melody of "Give A Little Bit".

Coincidence? I think not!

The sad part is, I actually think Kate Voegele is a talented musician with a distinctive, endearing vocal style. Look past the fact that the songs sound strikingly familiar and you have a pretty darn catchy pop record. In particular, "Chicago", "It's Only Life", and "Kindly Unspoken" stand out as fantastic cuts. This type of potential has me curious to see what Kate has to offer for her sophomore release. I have a feeling her best work might be just around the corner.

Jimmie's Chicken Shack - Fail On Cue

Affectionately known as "The Shack" by their loyal following, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack returns with their strongest release since 1999. Founding member and resident front man, Jimi HaHa, unapologetically leads his rotating band of gypsies back into the spotlight by focusing on what he does best: penning witty ditties infused with exactly the right amount of rock, pop and reggae. This is the kind of good, good stuff that would set the B-52’s and their love shack en fuego!

Although slightly more subdued than the band’s earliest efforts (acoustic guitar is sprinkled throughout), “Fail on Cue” showcases a mature band that is comfortable in its own feathers. Sparse on production, heavy on quality songwriting and melody, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack has earned the right to pollute summer radio play. Bring your own stereo (go ahead and Google it); these guys will bring the party!

Still looking for some street cred? On the last album, a little known lead singer by the name of Aaron Lewis made a special guest appearance. And if you don’t know who Aaron Lewis is, please leave MusicRant and don’t ever come back!*

Guitar Hero II

I'll admit it, I was a naysayer........... a grumpy ol' man dubious that a glorified version of Simon could be of much entertainment value. Boy was I wrong!!!

Activision hasn’t provided such gaming fun since Pitfall Harry filled our Atari hearts with crocodile, tar pit, barrel jumping joy.

If you have 2 hours to spare a day (you will need every bit of 2 hours a clip because this game is more addictive than nicotine covered Lays potato chips!!) then go to your local gaming merchant and buy this game-----------Do not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200---go straight to the store and buy the game.

Break it out at your next Tupperware party or general gathering of friends and acquaintances. If you don’t have any friends, fret not (seriously….that was witty) Turn on the gaming console, turn off the lights and play with yourself!!! (keep it clean folks, keep it clean)

Filled with 4 levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert) Guitar Hero II has a playing experience for all shapes and sizes. If you can actually handle the Expert level, you should seriously consider the rock and roll lifestyle. Either that or get out a little more often because you spend waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy too much time playing video games!!!

Korn Unplugged

Since their ground breaking self-titled release in 1994, Korn has pummeled audiences with their detuned 7 string guitar attack and freakishly angry vocals. Behind the dark aggression and sheer volume that defines Korn's music there has always been a hauntingly beautiful quality to the songs. Quite simply, even at their angriest Korn's catalog has always showcased a strong sense of musicality. After all, what other nu-metal band can claim to incorporate both bagpipes and nursery rhymes into a mosh inspiring anthem?

Haters be silenced, fans rejoice!! "Korn Unplugged" brings back the true spirit of MTV's once credible and popular series. From the Latin infused version of "Blind", the ethereal take on "Freak on a Leash" (featuring Evanescence's Amy Lee), right down to the "Make me Bad/In Between Days medley (starring the Cure), this album rocks in such a sophisticated manner your parents might even let you listen to it on your next road trip!!!

Marilyn Manson - Eat Me, Drink Me

Brian Warner (aka Marilyn Manson) certainly has a Christ complex. And we the people have become as accustomed to this Anti-Christ Superstar's ghoulish schtick as his pension for crafting industrial rock sized anthems for the "spooky" kids.

"Eat Me, Drink Me" is a departure from past Manson efforts. Gone are the fist pumping choruses of yester year in favor of a more brooding rock sound that actually includes guitar solos (and slick ones at that). Fans of "Anti-Christ Superstar", "Mechanical Animals", and "The Golden Age of Grotesque" may find themselves a little disappointed, but will still be able to find enough fabricated darkness to satisfy their cravings.

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Meeting people is easy...Especially when you are one of the most critically acclaimed rock bands of the past decade. Radiohead is back and true to form they insist on thumbing their collective noses at convention. This time around they released their latest album without a record label AND let their fans determine what they wanted to pay for it. That's right, name your price and you had the opportunity to digitally download the entire album directly to your computer more than 2 months before it's CD equivalent would be available. Risky? Maybe. Brilliant? Definitely!

Enough talk about business, it's back to pleasure.

Although not a guitar assault like 'The Bends or the balanced majesty of "OK Computer", "In Rainbows" fits neatly into the sonic soundscape of these two rock masterpieces. In fact, this sounds like the album that should have replaced "Kid A" as the "OK Computer" follow up. "15 Steps" and "Bodysnatchers" kick off the set with a bang, and from there Radiohead takes the listener through the hauntingly orchestrated, falsetto injected melodies that have captivated listeners and made Coldplay look like a cover band.

This is a musical meal not a snack, so take take your time. Oh and wait at least 30 minutes before swimming.

B-Sides? Really? Somebody call Dr. Phil 'cause these guys need some serious belittling.....I mean counseling!

Faktion released their self-titled debut album in 2006 and successfully managed to escape the traps of stardom. As a matter of fact, they managed to dodge the public spotlight in its entirety AS WELL as a secure financial future. That doesn't mean they aren't good---they are simply a Hoobastank that doesn't get the necessary promotional blitz.

Kid Rock - Rock N Roll Jesus

Question: What happens when a talented entertainer makes their millions and no longer finds it necessary to heed the ol' saying "dance with who brung ya"?

Answer: They decide to explore their "real" interests and likes. You know, the kind of stuff that wouldn't have bankrolled a fleet of Schwinn's, let alone a garage of Bentley's.
(.....Either that or they follow some cult religious leader and get in touch with their cosmic self while eating tofu burgers in the mountains of never, neverland.)

And so I say to Kid Rock.......come home Rock.....come back home...

"Rock N' Roll Jesus is 3/4 southern fried, 70's "freedom" rock and 1/4 good ol' Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid Rock!!
Kenny G - Faith: A Holiday Album

From the album cover alone I can tell Kenny G is one chill dude. Sitting smack dab in the middle of a collage of candles? This guy obviously knows advanced breathing techniques that would make any yogi envious. I mean, relaxing
in what is basically a controlled garden of fire?............with that hair?

So let's move past the fact that Kenny bears a striking resemblance to that guy from "Color Me Badd" and the fact that he plays the "girlie" saxophone (aka alto saxophone). Instead let's focus on his music. Although I was quick to cringe when my sister first told me she had bought a Kenny G Christmas album and absolutely loved it, I was forced to give it a chance. Tis the season to be jolly!

And then it hit the Grinch..(I mean me): Maybe Kenny G wasn't all that bad after all. Perhaps...........Kenny G means something more.

Whether you are entertaining guests or simply enjoying a glass of wine with that someone special, "Faith" is an excellent holiday mood setter. For that matter, try any one of Kenny G's holiday albums ("Wishes", "The Greatest Holiday Classics", "Miracles") and you will find yourself in the proper spirit of the season.

I kid because i love.

Better known as the banjo pluckin' snowman from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Burl Ives has become synonymous with Christmas. With a voice like Ol' Saint Nick himself, Ives delivers song after song of holiday cheer. If you listen to this album and don't get into the spirit of the season, you have a heart that is two sizes too small (sound familiar?).

So pour a glass of milk, bake some cookies and sing along with your favorite Christmas classics.

Personal favorites include:

The whole entire thing!!!!

Holly Jolly Christmas to all and to all a good night!

The National - Boxer

Easy to listen to, only gets better with age, never seems to get old, couldn't put it down.. These are only a few of the things said about the new album by The National. It's not the fast paced rock classic of some of their albums of past but it is their best effort yet!

Songs like Start a War, Fake Empire and Mistaken for Strangers are only a few of my favorites and are common place on any of my playlists for the subway.

Maybe I was not sold the first time I listened through the album but I'm starting to realize that may not be where you get your best music from, how many times have you been walking down the street and hear a song you just have to have only to never listen to it again a month later. That is not this album, these guys have built an album that will transcend the years and will be something you can hear 10, 20 even 30 years down the road and remember all the good old times as you kids or grand kids complain about like you did to your parents and The Beatles.

Pick it up listen a couple of times, I think you'll be impressed and won't put it down.

Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same (Deluxe Edition)

If you have seen the original motion picture version of this live album, you may still be wondering what the heck these rock titans were thinking when they littered those bizarre dream sequences throughout the presentation. I mean seriously, naked children playing in a stream? Bonzo riding on an old tractor? Did somebody spike the heroin?

All extremely valid critiques aside, the newly packaged and remastered 2 disc cd set contains only audio tracks so we are spared from the bad acid trip that was the film. This is really nice too because Led Zeppelin live is like a Krispy Kreme donut that is hot off the conveyor belt- - -You know, really damn good!

So why should you care about this album? Here you go:

1. Led Zeppelin rules
2. Led Zeppelin rocks
3. You wish you were Led Zeppelin
4. If you are my age, you very well may have been conceived while your parents were listening to Led Zeppelin. In which case they are really a part of your extended family.

Oh...and the project was headed by Jimmy Page who decided to add six new tracks that don't appear on the original release: Black Dog, Over the Hills and Far Away, Since I've Been Loving You, Misty Mountain Hop, Heartbreaker, and The Ocean.

Hinder - Extreme Behavior

Teenage America have found themselves a soundtrack to the next dance. So start gathering up your courage Johnny, you are going to need it once Mr. DJ sounds the first chords of "Lips of an Angel"!

Not since Nickelback have we seen an act storm onto the scene with powerful pop hooks and tongue in cheek lyrics that would put a smile on Jani Lane's face (lead singer of Warrant and more recently a cast member on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club"). From start to finish, Hinder breathes new life into the power ballad and gives the casual "american idol" on their morning commute a chance to show their neighbors in the fast line just how talented they really are.

So break out your lighters and favorite pair of jeans, good ol' fashioned pop metal is back in black and Hinder is president of the fan club!

+44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating

Oh where oh where have Blink 182 gone? Former guitarist/singer Tom DeLonge may have left the band to explore his more mature side, but remaining Blinkers Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker have not forgotten what brought them into the hearts of millions of TRL watchers.

With a slimmed down name (but equally as silly) , +44 delivers electrified, head banging, punk pop extremely reminiscent of their former incarnation - minus the "potty" humor and with even more sprinklings of modern rock seasoning. +44's first album seems to pick up right where 2003's "Blink 182" left off. These guys have definitely grown up, but lucky for us still have more hooks than a bait and tackle shop! Highlights include "Lycanthrope", "Baby Come On", "When Your Heart Stops Beating".

Evans Blue - The Melody and the Energetic Nature of Volume

Ever hear the musical stylings of Taproot (look for the upcoming review of "Blue-Sky Research"), A Perfect Circle, or Chevelle? If you are like me and enjoy all three, I guarantee you will love Evans Blue. Hailing from our friend in the north, Evans Blue have written their own chapter in the book of Alt Metal rock. Heck, they even tip their hat to the Adult Alternative format through a cover of fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan's "Possession". (We are all fortunate that this version sounds nothing at all like the original)

The album starts off with a bang including the engaging and aggressive: "A Cross and a Girl Named Blessed", “Stop and Say You Love Me", and "Cold (But I'm Still Here)". However, "Beg" is where Evans Blue really strut their stuff and hint toward a promising future plastered on alternative rock radio as well as the walls of misunderstood youth.
Pretty good stuff eh?

The Used - Berth

Screamo, Emo, Pop Rock, Pop Metal, Rock, Post Grunge. No matter how you want to classify The Used, you must file them under "KICK ASS". If you have heard any of their previous efforts ("The Used", "Maybe Memories", "In Love and Death") you are well aware that these guys can scream you into submission OR leave you pondering why your last relationship left you empty inside while questioning your ability to love again (thoughts pondered while drinking your morning cup of Earl Grey).

"Berth" doesn't offer you a unique spin on "Used" songs of old; rather it shows a band expressing themselves in the moment. Respect the fact that these guys sound as good live as they do in the studio. Is it better than Billy Joel on the Super Bowl? Do I really need to answer that?????

Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High

Sure-- Fall Out Boy sounds like the Barenaked Ladies on creatine, but it doesn’t mean that self respecting rockers can’t enjoy. Although not as immediately accessible as 2005’s “From Under the Cork Tree”, “Infinity on High” still contains hints of what made Fall Out Boy MTV’s alterna-darlings………..loud amplified guitars, catchy pop vocals, and oil slick production. Is this the band’s finest work? No way! That being said, these guys still show growth and promise in songs like “This Ain’t A Scene, This Is An Arms Race” and “Hum Hallelujah”. Jay-Z even lends a helping hand in the anthemic opening track “Thriller”. If it’s good enough for Jay-Z its got to be good enough for you…right? Budweiser certainly thinks so!!!

Lostprophets - Liberation Transmission

Do you enjoy rock anthems? I sure do!!! You’ll find more hits than Richard Pryor on Sudafed on Lostprophets very own, "Liberation Transmission". Through the years this band has given us hints of brilliance but finally they outshine, outshine, outshine (Soundgarden anyone?) expectations with this amazing pop rock masterpiece. Seriously folks, if you believe in all things rock you have got a new master. And if Metallica has taught us anything over the years, it is that you must obey your master (master!, master!) ...That and rehab + extremely long rockumentaries can make a legendary band really, really bad.

Incubus - Light Grenades

On first listen of "Light Grenades" I stared at my stereo in disbelief. "What is this senseless dribble?" the voices in my head muttered. I was hoping for a "Make Yourself" clone----------high intensity rock that I could bang my head to while practicing my impeccable sense of harmony (at least this is what the voices tell me). Instead, I received a logical follow up to "A Crow Left of the Murder".

After letting go of my preconceived wants and actually listening to the album objectively, I realized that "Light Grenades" is an extremely solid album; one that I can listen to from beginning to end without having the urge to skip multiple tracks.
Highlights include "A Kiss to Send Us Off", "Dig", "Anna Molly", "Diamonds and Coal".

Although I can't control the fact that Incubus will continue to mature musically and explore new ground, I can revel in the realization that they will always write clever, insightful lyrics with intelligent musical accompaniment. I get the feeling that Incubus would be as comfortable teaching music theory as they are in performing sold out shows.

Daughtry - Daughtry

With the continued popularity of bands like Nickelback, 3 Doors Down and now the surging success of Hinder (see review of Hinder’s debut album on MusicRant), Daughtry finds itself in a strong position to become a staple on the airwaves.

At first mention of the name, purists may simply dismiss the band due to the frontman’s extended stay on last season’s (2006) American Idol. I even found myself going into my first listen with the attitude of “Show me what you got” (keep an eye out for such similar lyrical/artist references in all MusicRant reviews. This was a blatant Limp Bizkit reference) Fact is - Chris Daughtry and supporting cast have crafted a solid, radio friendly pop rock record.

All songs on the self-titled debut are well constructed, produced and are begging to be played at an arena near you. Highlights include “It’s not Over”, “Used to”, “Home” (as seen on American Idol), and “Over You”. Heck, Slash even makes a guest appearance on the straight forward rocking “What I want”!

Legend has it that those who find fame and fortune lose their identity in the process. If that is the case, Chris Daughtry has nothing to worry about. At the end of the day, he has a billboard sized tattoo of his surname across his shoulders to remind him who he is!!

Madina Lake - From Them, Through Us, To You

I have a voracious appetite for discovering new music. My personal preferences vary but I am definitely a sucker for anything that includes loud guitars, thunderous drums, passionate vocals (screaming is definitely welcome), and hooky choruses.

Stage Set - After casually watching MTV one morning before work, I heard a teaser for “House of Cards” by Madina Lake and was immediately sucked in and excited about what I heard – not to mention the prospect of discovering a brand new diamond in the rough!! (The diamond being Madina Lake; the rough being solid rock music on MTV).

Madina Lake runs the gamut of the genre affectionately known as Emo (and to be more distinct – Screamo) Although “From Them, Through Us, To You” does not necessarily offer ground breaking musical advancements, it does offer exquisite arrangements (haunting piano, layered under drum loops, thunderous drums, loud guitars – you get the picture) and more importantly extremely listenable songs.

With a pinch of Lostprophets, a sprinkle of Finch, and a touch of Taking Back Sunday all rolled up in a tightly wrapped musical burrito, Madina Lake finds them a recipe for success. I look forward to see what they cook up for us on the next album.
Of particular interest to the masses – “Here I Stand”, “In Another Life”, “Adalia”, and “House of Cards”.

Chevelle - Vena Sera

The casual listener may find it difficult to distinguish between Chevelle and Tool. After all, it sounds as if Chevelle lead singer/guitarist, Pete Loeffler, has spent his formative years working on mastering Maynard Keenan’s vocal stylings. Fortunately for us, Chevelle is able to provide a more accessible alt metal sound – a finished product less esoteric and grandiose than Tool and its step brother A Perfect Circle.

"Vena Sera" (translation: vein liquid) adds another well written chapter to the consistent book of work Chevelle has been creating over the past few years. Unlike bands that stray from their formula for success, Chevelle stays tried and true to its strengths. If you liked Chevelle’s past albums, go out and grab this “Vena Sera” now.......You already love it!!!!

Good Charlotte - Good Morning Revival

Entrenched in synths and midi drums, "Good Morning Revival" finds the Madden brothers continuing down the path of their previous effort "Chronicles of Life and Death". Unfortunately, fans of "The Young And The Hopeless" will find themselves one step closer to skipping the renewal on the band's fan club membership.

The album does offer up some nice punk pop moments such as "All Black", "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" and if you are feeling particularly emotional or pensive "March On" deserves a spot on your "I am going to make it through this depressing time in my life" playlist.

Limp Bizkit - Significant Other

“It’s 9 Teen 90 Nine Baby!!!” Well actually it’s 2 Thousand 007 (James Bond Style) playa hater! But relax race fans and allow me to transport you back 8 years……..A time when Kid Rock was going platinum, Ricky Martin was “Livin’ La Vida Loca”, Cher had a reason to “Believe”, and Rob Thomas was making Santana “Smooth” (and truckloads of money). 1999 was also the year Limp Bizkit had a reason to party like – well like it was 1999!!

Ever since the head banging, fist clenching remake of George Michael’s “Faith” put Fred Durst and crew on the musical map, Limp Bizkit and the newly dubbed “Nu-Metal” movement became a staple in the MTV staple gun. “Significant Other” was Limp Bizkit’s slick follow up to their raw and aggressive debut, “3 Dollar Bill, Y’all”. Avoiding the sophomore slump, Limp Bizkit rode the perfect pop cultural storm to incredible multimedia success. After years of grunge, music finally became fun again – rock and roll personalities were actually seeking fame and enjoying all the excesses that go along with it.

Let’s face it, you either love Limp Bizkit or you hate them. If you are looking for intelligent thought-provoking lyrics look elsewhere. If you want to crank up your stereo and “break stuff” then you’ve found yourself a soundtrack. For fans of testosterone injected, mosh enticing, musical lethargy mixed with hip hop – "Significant Other" does not disappoint. Guest appearances by Jonathan Davis (Korn), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver), and Method Man round out the album.

Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn Thing

Hey! Hey! The Sk8ter girl of 2002 has reemerged from her 3 year hiatus a happily married young woman (and by happily married I mean she isn’t divorced yet – and that has to count for something!!). Apparently early fame and fortune hasn’t caused this pop anti-diva to miss out on her true passion …………………cheerleading! Listen closely and on more than one song you may feel like you have been unwillingly transported to a high school pep rally. Although older and wiser, the pop world is lucky that the adolescent exuberance of Lavigne’s previous work remains in tact. Once again, from top to bottom Avril strings together hits like A-Rod.

Go ahead and write this album off as all filler no killer – at least Mrs. Lavigne-Whibley writes her own songs!

Originally released in September of 2006 (why an artist would ever release an album with summer in the title in the fall is beyond me) Smash Mouth has crafted a feel good album that will immediately transport the listener to sunny days and hot temps topped off with a late afternoon jaunt to the local surf bar.

I am far from a Smash Mouth advocate, but I must say I was immediately drawn into the album’s vibe. Like em’ or not, Smash Mouth has become unapologetically well known for constructing Top 40 hits. Chances are you or someone you know has given a memorably tipsy karaoke performance of “All Star” at some point in time.

Goo Goo Dolls - Let Love In

Breathy vocals layered over strummed acoustic guitars, well placed lead electric lines, anchored by a steady bass/drum foundation and uplifted by hummable melodies about peace, love and understanding (OK--maybe more about hope, love, love lost and generally anything to do with love and heartache).

Well that basically sums up any Goo Goo Dolls album you have had the pleasure of listening to. “Let Love In” is no exception - a great pop rock/adult alternative album that would be given the parental stamp of approval on any family road trip.

Hits include “Stay With You”, “Let Love In”, “We’ll Be Here (When You’re Gone)”, “Better Days”, “Can’t Let It Go”.

NIN - Year Zero

Armed with bass, guitars, drums and enough blips and beeps to bring back fond childhood memories playing Missile Command, Trent Reznor is back on the charts. “Year Zero”, the highly anticipated follow up to “With Teeth”, finds Reznor making a return to his Industrial roots in a big way. All songs have more than enough ear candy to put the sugar sensitive in a coma. For those with a strong constitution this album represents an aural Halloween.

Though lacking some of the “poppier” ditties found on his last effort, “Year Zero” definitely pays homage to the entire NIN catalog including the proper sprinkling of aggressive and passive aggressive tracks we have come to expect/love. Where Mr. Reznor finds time to produce such highly intricate work is quite mind boggling when you consider he spends the majority of his day in the gym. (Have you seen this guy lately? If you don’t buy this album he may seriously kick you’re a$%!)

The music and marketing industry needs to pay close attention to NIN. In a digital world where record labels are taking kids to court for downloading songs illegally, NIN thumbs its nose at convention. Instead of crying over potentially lost revenues, Reznor gives the fans what they want but in a completely unique way------------------Thumb drive containing an unreleased song left in a concert bathroom or a contest to see who could best remix a track off of “With Teeth” using GarageBand software ring a bell?

Homework assignment: Find a dark room, put on your finest noise canceling headphones, and crank up “Year Zero”. Just bring a flashlight in case you are a bit skittish.

Linkin Park - Minutes To Midnight

It’s hard to believe that four years have passed since Linkin Park’s last release “Meteora” burned up the alt rock charts. A lot has happened in this time:

1. Slash went into rehab
2. Britany Spears went off the deep end and into rehab like 4 times in a week’s time period
3. Axl promised us that "Chinese Democracy" was coming out every single year and yet we still wait. Chances are he knows someone in rehab.
4. Nick and Jessica fell in and out of love (Bon Jovi Style) and the world is waiting for one of them to fall to pieces (Velvet Revolver style) and check into rehab.

I digress…………

Since their inception, Linkin Park has seamlessly meshed hip hop and rock in a manner that is both commercially acceptable as well as rocker friendly. Matter o’ fact, the Jigga Man himself was so impressed that he decided to enlist Linkin Park’s services for some truly delectable “mash ups” (check out 2005’s “Collision Course”).

With a few albums of success under their belt, you may assume that Linkin Park would play it safe. Well, they do – kind a, sorta.

In honor of the end of the school year, we will provide an analogy to describe this album.

“Meteora” is to Jolt (popular caffeinated beverage of the 80’s, prior to the advent of Red Bull) as “Minutes to Midnight” is to:

A. Hawaiian Punch
B. Hi-C Ecto Cooler
C. Cran-Grape
D. Coke Zero

*If you answered D., you are correct!!! Congratulations – you have earned yourself a virtual high five and a Scratch and Sniff sticker of your choice!

Why Coke Zero you may ask? Simply put, “Minutes to Midnight” does not rock nearly as hard as Linkin Park’s previous efforts. But, much like Coke Zero it still tastes great and bears a strong resemblance to its highly popular predecessor. Although slightly Mello-Yello the album shows a more sophisticated Linkin Park heavily focused on melody and emotion as evident in songs such as “Shadow of the Day”, “Leave Out All The Rest”, and “In Between” (to name a few). For those who fear change, the band does provide a small helping of classic Linking Park including “Given Up”, “Bleed It Out”, “What I’ve Done” and “No More Sorrow”.

Fortunately, Linkin Park pulls off the dichotomy in their sound and have given themselves the ability to further their musical explorations. If “Minutes to Midnight” was a mid term exam, I would give the boys an A for execution and effort.

The Exies - A Modern Way Of Living With The Truth

I have had my ear on The Exies for the past few years; checking out their first two major label releases I found myself thinking they were just asi asi (asi asi = "okay" for the Spanish challenged). They definitely had the post grunge sound I normally enjoy, but someway, somehow they were missing a little something-something.

And then a compadre of mine told me I should check out their latest album, “A Modern Way of Living With the Truth”. Hoping the third time was the charm, I fired up Rhapsody and took the 13 track effort for a joy ride (Roxette style).

“There he is!”(think Sopranos) Finally, the prospect I have been waiting to break out of Triple A ball has risen from the ashes of mediocrity like a Phoenix Sun. Top to bottom, back to front, backwards, forwards…any which way you choose to slice it---this is a solid rock album. It is the sophomore effort Puddle of Mud wishes they presented to the world: hummable melodies with crunchy guitar and Cobainesque vocals…….Hooks a plenty with just enough grit to make you want to wash your hands!

Give an extra special listen to “Different than You”, “Lay Your Money Down”, “Stray”, and “These Are The Days”.

Sum 41 - Underclass Hero

Right from the opening notes of the title track, you get the feeling you have heard this somewhere before. And you have, it's just that this album has a different name, different packaging and a different national anthem than the bands from which it was cloned. If Sum 41 were in the Justice League, you could think of them as Bizarro Blink 182....who just happen to be first cousins of Green Day.....who once dated a girl who went to prom with the guitarist in Fall Out Boy.

Get the picture?

Fortunately, "Underclass Hero" takes all the likeable parts of the aforementioned bands to make one enjoyable, mature, punk/pop record.

Good thing too because if it wasn't good, the Wonder Twins would not be pleased. And no one, I mean no one, wants to upset the Wonder Twins!!

Korn - Untitled

A more fitting title for Korn's latest effort would be "Uninspired". Armed with a creepier than usual aural assault, Korn find themselves regressing to the self indulgent sound of "Untouchables" rather than the more commercially accessible "See You On The Other Side". Sure there are moments when the pieces of the puzzle all fit together ("Bitch, We got a Problem" and "Innocent Bystander"), but all in all this collection of songs just falls flat.

Fans of Korn will still find bright spots in the work, they just might have to try a little harder than in the past.

Fuel - Angels & Devils

Few bands can truly rebound from the loss of a lead singer. There are exceptions to the rule: Van Hagar, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden. What do these bands all have in common?? They are old!!!! That was then, this is now my S.E. Hinton loving friends!!

Can anyone tell me what happened to the surviving members of Sublime? Last time I checked, Long Beach Dub Allstars weren't winning any Grammy's.

And the fellas from No Doubt? Check the cast members registry at Disneyland.

"Angels & Devils" is Fuel's first effort since the departure of lead singer, Brett Scallions. A fan favorite and extremely powerful vocalist, Fuel sans Scallions seemed like a recipe for disaster - - - like a cornflake without the milk (another lyrical reference - this time from the early 80's). To the contrary, the spotlight now shines brighter on the musical prowess of songwriter/guitarist Carl Bell and new frontman, Toryn Green. Green has obviously spent time on the karoake machine busting out Fuel tunes, but also adds an Edwin McCainesque soulfulness to the mix. The result is a rejuvenated sound reminiscent of the band's first musical entree, "Sunburn". This album is solid as a rock (Ashford and Simpson style) from the bottom right to the tippy top.

Highlights include: "Gone", "Forever", "Wasted Time", "Leave the Memories Alone".

Kelly Clarkson - My December

Miss Independent is back and apparently has some things she would like to get off of her chest. "My December" finds the American Idol champion delivering her own "Jagged Little Pill", minus Alanis' biting delivery and colorful lyrics. Although darker in subject matter and musical arrangement than anything in her prior catalog, Kelly's
troubles come across as a cranky child rather than an angry, vindictive, self-empowered woman. All in all, the album seems like diary entries of a sad little girl.

Critiques aside, there are definitely some decent pop rock nuggets worth checking out: "Never Again", "One Minute", "Hole" and "Sober". Conveniently these are the first 4 songs on the album. Track 5, "Don't waste your time", says it all for the remainder of the album. Thanks for the advice Kelly!

Velvet Revolver - Libertad

Ladies and Gentleman, MusicRant is pleased to welcome........ VELVET REVOLVER!!!!

While their first effort was just north of disappointing, the super group's sophomore release showcases a band of amigos hitting their collective musical stride. Like a caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly in Spring, the metamorphosis is complete: Less of Guns N Roses reincarnated as an STP tribute band, and more of just plain ol' Velvet Revolver.

Simply stated, "Libertad" treats the listening public to a cohesive set of slinky, sleazy rock and roll offerings that would make Axl Rose's dreads curl.

Single serving highlights include:

-Let it Roll
-She Builds Quick Machines
-Pills, Demons & ETC.
-Mary Mary
-Gravedancer

Note to Slash fans: The cat in the hat guitarist sounds great as usual, but unfortunately there simply isn't enough.

Note to Slash: WE WANT MORE SOLOS!!! (or it's coal in the stocking this year bub)

Sincerely,

Santa

Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

The band that gave Mentos its 15 minutes of fame is back!! And this time they have scaled back sheer musical output, instead focusing their efforts hedging between rock and roll gems and sweet pea lullabies.

If you are like me and love when Grohl and the boys turn the amps up to '11', you will be slightly disappointed in the musical direction. More classic rock than Alt rock the Foo find themselves slowing down a bit in their golden years, leaning toward drawn out indulgences rather than powder keg singles.

All that aside, one thing the Foo Fighters have always been extremely good at is consistency. They have a distinct
sound that no matter what type of musical direction they choose to explore, ends up sounding like the Foo Fighters. For me, that is just like pizza........even if it isn't great, it's still pretty darn good!

Check out "The Pretender", "Let It Die", "Erase/Replace", "Long Road to Ruin"

Buckcherry - 15

Move over Motley Crue, there is new competition for the best strip club anthem of all time. "Crazy Bitch" provides certified pole dancers with the necessary inspiration to pay off that massage school tuition in record time. Critics may not accuse them of being the next incarnation of the Doors, but if you like sleazy, bar rock in the vein of Guns N Roses, Buckcherry will not disappoint. "Fifteen" is a showcase for the band's most cohesive set of songs to date. Highlights include "Everything", "Crazy Bitch", and "Carousel".

Dosage

Collective Soul burst onto the airwaves in 1994 with their smash hit "Shine". (I just made you scream "Yeah" in a muffled, husky tone didn't I?) This was followed in 1995 with their self titled album including the popular selections "Gel”,"The World I Know" and more notably "December" (what adolescent boy wasn't chanting "Turn your head now baby just spit me out"?).

In 1999, Collective Soul gave us "Dosage". This album is by no means a musical departure for the Atlanta rockers; they have made a name for themselves by creating extremely consistent, well crafted songs with an extremely slick production touch. What "Dosage" does provide is a strikingly listenable playlist that will not only have you humming along, but might even teach you a thing or two about songwriting.

Puddle of Mudd - Famous

The third time is the charm. After hitting the dreaded Sophomore slump, Puddle of Mudd has bounced back with a Post Grunge compilation that contains a healthy dose of Nickelbackesque power ballads, tempered with shots of adrenalized, tongue in cheek rockers. Finally living up to their debut's success, Puddle of Mudd has taken the best elements of their early success and plastered them all over this album:

- whiny, raspy vocal stylings a la Kurt Cobain
- Hooks, hooks, hooks. Tinkerbell beware, this CD has more hooks than a Neverland nightmare!
